A PHOTOGRAPHER’S NOTES AND MORE

A series of essays and poems….

THE PINK AND PURPLE MIST OF THE SMOKY MOUNTAINS

~A HISTORY OF BEAUTY, WAR, INDIGENOUS AMERICANS, AND HARD WORK~

….as seen through my eyes!

By: Jacqueline E Hughes

I feel as though I am only borrowing the innocent things that surround me: the sky, an old barn, people in history, memories of mine and others, the soil, grass, and stone of a place we particularly love, and time itself. But I am placing them neatly and securely within containers without depth or dimension; digital photographs taken to preserve actions in time that excited my being then as they do at this exact moment.

I am pleased to think that my photographs, trapped within the ethos of time, past and present, reach out to those I might capture in the near and distant future. It warms me to believe that our own future transcends time and space and provides hope for us far beyond our known experiences.

I write about these experiences from a poetic perspective and become one with the history of beauty, war, Indigenous Americans, buildings that communicate with me, and make tangible all of the long, hard work our forefathers endured throughout the years in order to create a better life for us.

WINDOWS

With blades of grass and stone, alike, immortally drenched in

                    rain and blood,

The history that surrounds this dampened paradise attracts

                    the brave and the bold.

I can feel the past running through my lug-bottom soles

as I walk each path and trail.

With weapon of choice strapped ‘round my neck just waiting

                    to capture and behold,

Each footstep marked in the crooks and crannies…marching,

                    marching without fail.

Dilapidated barn just around the bend, if only you could talk to

                    me on this sunny day,

I know what you might say to this wayward traveler so keen

                    on capturing your image:

“Cling righteously to what’s transpired, before my hat of rusty tin and swayback walls near collapse. Lambs and calves were born and sheltered within my bosom before the stink of automobile exhaust, acid rain, and time contributed to my inevitable demise.”

As hard work’s sweat soaked through clothes and bloodied

                    hands gripped the plow,

These men and women, born of guts and glory, raised

                    offspring who endured hard times;

Knew the true meaning of survival as they faced every

                    challenge known to humankind.

Were the encircling mountains a blessing or a curse as

                    Sunday’s bells began to chime;

Truly massive hurdles that bone-weary bodies translated into

                    obstacles so unkind?

Somehow, we often remember you in cold, gray tones of

                    silver-coated copper plates,

With each image bearing the bitter smell of the

                    photographer’s flash powder light.

Have the bright and vivid colors of Indigenous Americans

                    blended with your own,

After the Cherokee tribes, forced to leave, began to shed

                    their Trail of Tears?

Sadly, ten years later, Congress grants them money used to

                    purchase their own land.

We delight in all your glory, from trees of burnt sienna to fields

                    in every shade of green.

And, purple misted mountains slowly blackening in the fading

                    light of the setting sun!

You grace us with your ‘pure light’ from early morning hours

into the magenta and blue evenings.

We drive long distances to see you; envying those who already

                    call you home.

Western North Carolina, an illuminated gemstone that fills me

                    with eternal joy!

Wishing all of you who nurture, have nurtured, love and guide a child (all children) through the world we live in—and help to make them the strong, kind, loving beings they were meant to be! Happy Mother’s Day, this Sunday and each day of the year!

THE ASPIRATIONS OF A TRAVEL BLOGGER

A series of essays....

THE MISTY CLIFFS OF MOHER SHOT ON A WILD AND
WINDY DAY FROM DOOLIN PIER

....as seen through my eyes!

By: Jacqueline E. Hughes

The scorched earth smell of peat fires burning seems to linger on, reluctant to leave, even after having returned from Ireland weeks ago. The raw, pungent perfume of gasoline fumes  remains a pleasant memory as I picture my dad filling-up the tank of our powder-blue Chevrolet before leaving on a family excursion to grandma and grandpa’s farm on a Saturday morning or, to Chicago to spend the day at the Museum of Science and Industry.

Indelible marks leaving lasting impressions incapable of being removed through time, space, or memory.

Choosing these two examples, our most recent trip to Ireland and an example of other trips enjoyably recalled from my childhood, it’s easy to understand how these lingering memories represent many of the major reasons why we love to travel in the first place. As travelers, we bring home certain triggers that will serve to arouse feelings associated with a particular travel experience we, subconsciously, wish to remember. And, certain smells, sounds, and visuals can prompt happy times spent traveling with family and friends throughout the years.

Taking photos during a trip remains one of the most popular means of capturing digital highlights that will become my visual chronicle of events, a detailed recollection of a particular place or travel memory. Organizing these pictures in a Snapfish or Vistaprint photo book or, organizing them on an IOS Flash Drive will help preserve your visual memories for a very long time.

Sadly, I am one of those people who tends to leave my photos on my smartphone even when I see this unimaginable number steadily grow throughout the duration of many trips, special occasions, and ‘save photo’ options that often revolve around my grandchildren. And, I can totally justify my behavior! You see, I am constantly going back through them as I gather, sort, and select a few for each Blog post I write and, eventually, publish. They serve as my lifeline to Blog ideas, as well as illustrations for each post. I know, carrying my IOS Flash Drive would be as convenient and far more flexible. Baby steps...

A LANE POSSESSING
 INFINITE POSSIBILITIES!

A COZY HAVEN FORSAKEN
BY WEATHER AND TIME...

I like to think of my stories as little vignettes representing my travels along with all of the entertaining and beautiful people and, happenstance that touch my life while moving about from one place to another. Naturally, the main goal of every travel blogger, I believe, is to capture a file folder of these brief evocative accounts or episodes that represent our time discovering other places and share all of these first-hand revelations with as many people as possible after returning home. So, traveling for me becomes deeper and much more multi-layered.

My photographs are my friends. Each one represents a child I have nurtured from its initial conception; set-up, arranged, brought forth from the light surrounding it, and positioned with care right before hitting the small, round button that pushes it out into the world for my perusal and final approval. This process brings me so much joy and delight and keeps me trying harder and harder to make the next photo that much better.

Taking some amazing shots of such beautiful places as the Wild Atlantic Way along Ireland’s hauntingly beautiful and rugged west coast, is easier to do than you might think. The light, colors, textures, and sheer beauty of this particular portion of Ireland astounds me more and more with every visit we make. I might be looking one way, taking a picture of a moss-covered stone wall, turn my head slightly and be able to capture a completely different shot filled with all of the glory that the first picture possessed but set in a new and unique composition.

I will forever attribute my love of Connemara, Galway, the Aran Islands, the village of Doolin, and the limestone moonscapes of the Burren to the magical feeling I feel inside whenever I am there.

The ultimate goal of a travel blogger, what we mainly aspire to achieve, is to accurately record and present, to the best of our ability, a written account of what we have witnessed, discovered, enjoyed (sometimes, not enjoyed), and photographed. We do this for those who want to read about where we have traveled and for those who may desire to travel to these places themselves in the future. Keeping our story as honest, quirky, informative, and generally entertaining as possible is the goal we set out to achieve and is the main responsibility of every travel blogger.

I will mentally walk through each vignette, eyes closed, as I plan which story I will pull-out of my ‘travel file’ before committing it to words. Becoming familiar, once again, with the sights, sounds, tastes, smells, and actions of each segment encourages me to carry-on and produce my opening sentence. Often, I base my choice of story on a particular picture I’ve taken and this offers me the opportunity to add more pictures, before publishing, that will coincide with and offer more visual awareness and credence to my words.

I love my job! I enjoy making choices (almost never in chronological order), and by the time I walk away from my PC, several hours after publishing my story via social media, I feel proud of what I’ve done.

My Website (Moving On...2018), includes this note which sums-up how I approach sharing a variety of life’s stories with my readers:

“I am so happy to welcome in the new year, 2018!!! My Blog is changing-up a bit....mainly because I am evolving. Travel will always take precedence in my life and, my journeys will be shared with you. This 2018 version will offer a variety of new stories and personal ideas, as well. This is all about having fun and enjoying this Beautiful Journey called......Life!!!”

Call the story I am sending out into the ethos today self-promotion or a guide to travel blogging or both but, it is precisely because I enjoy what I do so much, that it would be impossible for me to not write about ‘life’s little vignettes’ that I live through and then, happily, share.

Travel is a feeling we have in our hearts. It may be a two-week stay in Ireland or France, or, simply, a shopping excursion to the local grocery store. Each moment of our life draws from the next moment and creates our journey along the way. Please remember to fill your journey with Love and Respect for the places and people you meet along each winding road and I promise you will learn from and appreciate the true meaning of travel.

DEAR READER......

Captured on my iPhone.....

.....as seen through my eyes!

By: Jacqueline E. Hughes

                                                                                                                                  Number 1 in a series

Dear Reader,

Every now and then I like to go back through some of the pictures I have taken throughout the year with the idea of understanding why they were taken in the first place.  The above picture is a prime example.  However, Dear Reader, I request your help with this new endeavor, enterprise, undertaking of mine....and, I'll get to this a bit later on.

Now, I suggest you enlarge the above photo and zoom in as close as possible on these four individuals.  That's right.....close.  We are looking at a daughter and mother sitting side-by-side and a middle-aged, married couple, allowing a bit more space between one another, sitting and waiting for something to happen and, hopefully, something more exciting than all four of them combined!!

The above scene, taken on June 6, 2014, was captured in the foyer of the chain restaurant TGI Fridays, located at Waterford Lakes on the east side of Orlando, Florida.  As we all know, this scene is becoming more typical everywhere you look as technology becomes notably embraced by everyone!

My husband and I had recently started the demolition required in our outdated kitchen and, with life in turmoil, hunger calling, we went out for a burger on a Saturday afternoon.  Orlando Saturdays can be jammed and packed with wall-to-wall people.  This day was no exception.  We needed a respite from rehab and our tummies filled and waiting a short time for this to happen was no problem at all.

Considering that talking with and watching people are two of my favorite hobbies, we utilized this downtime to unwind, exchange stories about 'the kids' up in Michigan and strategize about using our time productively the rest of the weekend.  Dan and I had experienced the 'weekend warrior' routine two years before when remodeling our master bathroom and knew how important following a plan would be.

The foyer of the restaurant was comparatively small, just big enough to allow several people to escape a summer shower, if need be.  The six of us occupying this enclosed, hollowed space created an unusual feeling of quietness after a few minutes.  As we sat comparing notes in whispered tones on our side of the space, it was apparent that silence prevailed on the opposite side.

# Texting a Friend
# Checking Messages
# Checking Game Scores
# Deleting Unnecessary Emails

Absolute quiet.  With silent keyboards, there wasn't even the sound of 'clicking' to stir-up the atmosphere.  Were we witnessing a complete disregard for the unique enjoyment of interacting with those physically nearby?  Exchanging human contact with cyber interfacing instead?  With minds compartmentalized by their own devices, literally, mother and daughter, husband and wife, sat silently, deep within their private worlds.....for quite some time.

Slowly lifting my iPhone in order to capture this shot, I was fearful of disturbing one of them or, embarrassing myself by being so blatant and obvious about taking their picture.  I was only kidding myself because my precautionary intent towards their privacy was totally lost on all four of them!  Not an eye was blinked nor an eyebrow raised in the making of this photo!

Then I began picking-up on the specific body language among my subjects.  All four faces were without expression with lips straight, eyes downcast and seemingly closed.  The old adage of if you cross your arms over your torso it's as though you are silently protecting yourself from negative vibes or words tossed at you by others definitely applied here.  Something was 'crossed' on each one of them....with mother and daughter sporting the more painful 'leg-over-leg' position and my 'Billy Joel lookalike' and avid sports enthusiast and his wife a bit less cautious with their ankles only modestly crossed.

Suddenly, sharp, little red lights began to pierce the moment sending silent waves of color up the back of the cool, black Naugahyde bench.  Billy Joel and his quiet better-half were being summoned...not by a human voice, but by a small, square device equipped with red running lights, no sounds attached.  Like robots preprogrammed to respond (Pavlov would have enjoyed this conditioned reflex), the couple silently entered the restaurant to be seated, slipping side-by-side between the oversized, double glass doors.  I could only hope that their Internet reception proved even better once inside or, with any luck, an actual conversation would engage between them while eating lunch!!

Not surprisingly, my mother/daughter team failed to even look up when 'married couple' exited the foyer.  I don't know what happened next with them because Dan and I were being summoned to be seated by the flashing red lights right on the heels of 'married couple.'

Progress is always a good thing as its definition suggests....moving forward; development or growth.  When progress impedes the eye-to-eye, personal relationship and communication between human beings then, at least in my opinion, it's moving us in the wrong direction.....backwards!

This is where you come in, Dear Reader.....

*I need you to help me caption my photo above.  The caption does not have to reflect my opinions from this story.  It's all about YOU!  Please leave your captions in the comments below on this Facebook post.  The caption with the most "Likes" will caption my photo!

**My Google+ and Twitter Followers are urged to participate, as well, at each of these sites.....!

*Do you believe that people are losing the ability to speak comfortably face-to-face?

*Physicians are finding a new syndrome characterized by our constant use of technological devices that can harm our spinal chords and cause chronic pain.  Do you agree or disagree with this finding?  Please state your reasons why or why not.

*Would you consider giving-up all of your 'tech devices' for a 24 hour period?  (This includes ALL video game consoles, my friend!)

Thank you for all your help and feedback because I really do appreciate it!
